Q. My husband is a diabetic and he likes to eat peanuts, could you
please help me to figure how much and what kind to buy him?
A. Nuts can be a great addition to your meal plan. Nutritionally, they
contain fiber and a variety of vitamins and minerals. In addition, they
are cholesterol free and contain unsaturated fats (including
monounsaturated fats).
Nuts are high in fat and calorie dense so you want to watch portion
sizes as a little goes a long way.
One ounce of peanuts is 28 shelled peanuts. You might count them out
and put them in baggies to help you adhere to portion sizes.
Look for dry roasted or raw nuts. Limit salted, added oil, or coated
(honey roasted, chocolate covered, etc.) nuts to avoid extra calories
and sodium.
