Q. I was recently diagnosed with Pre-Diabetes and was put on Metformin. I've been trying to watch what I eat but unfortunately in the past few weeks, I
have gained 5 pounds. When I was eating whatever I wanted without the meds, I stayed the same weight. In the past I tried everything,
dieting and going to the gym at least 3 days a week but after a year of doing this, I only lost 10 pounds total. Do you have any suggestions?
A. Here are a few things to consider:
Exercise can be very helpful with losing weight. Specifically, cardio or aerobic exercise can help you to burn calories and rev up your
metabolism. Workout for 30-60 minutes each day five days per week.
Portion sizes are also very important. Read food labels for product portion size recommendations and
use measuring cups to help (e.g. cereal, milk, rice, pasta, etc).
The types of foods you are eating are also important. You will want to ensure you are eating the right amounts of whole grains, fruits and
vegetables, lowfat dairy products, and lean proteins.
Also, you should discuss your weight gain with your doctor to rule out any possible medical related issues.
